The Kwan Series: Zung Jung v2.4 scoring aid cards

By

The following teaching aid cards were created in 2001 to assist new players in learning the Zung Jung Mahjong Scoring System.

Designed as a companion to the contemporary Zung Jung v2.4 rules document, these cards provided a visual method for identifying patterns and calculating hand values. Rather than requiring players to memorize the entire scoring system, instructors could physically stack and combine cards representing the patterns present in a winning hand, making score calculation easier to understand.

These cards represent one of the earliest known educational resources created specifically for Zung Jung Mahjong. They demonstrate that from its earliest years, the system’s development was accompanied not only by rules and scoring theory, but also by efforts to make the game more accessible to new players.

The cards are preserved here for historical and educational purposes as part of the ongoing effort to document the history and evolution of the Zung Jung Mahjong Scoring System.

These cards are designed as an aid for teaching Zung Jung mahjong scoring system to beginners. In order to use these cards to teach Jung Zung, the teacher must know the Zung Jung system and explain it to the other players, using these cards as an aid. It is not possible to learn Zung Jung just by looking at these cards alone; please read the text document (mj_v2_4.txt) for a description of how to play Zung Jung. These cards allow the teacher to teach Jung Zung without having to make the other players read the text document, which can be cumbersome.

When a player wins a hand, these cards are used to illustrate how the hand is scored. Take the cards corresponding to the patterns contained in the hand, rotate them so that the appropriate edge is on top, and stack them together without covering the top edges. Some cards contain some less frequent patterns on the back side.

Example:

[B-678] [C-678] C-678 {D-234} D-55

Since this hand is “No Terminals” and “All Sequences”, take card 1 and rotate it so that the “10” edge is on top (because the hand contains two of the three 5-point patterns). Also take the card for “Three Similar Sequences 35” and stack it with card #1. Now it is easy to see that the hand is worth 10+35=45 points.

This file should be viewed and printed with Acrobat Reader English version. Compatibility with other language versions of Acrobat Reader has not been verified.

To use these cards, please cut them out along the thick black edges. For the two-sided cards, please paste the front and back sides together using tape or such. It is recommended that you paste all the cards onto thicker card stock (such as “library catalog cards”, easily available from any stationary store) if you’re printing them on thinner paper. The ID numbers serve only to help you put the front and back sides of the two-sided cards together; you can cut them away.

Special thanks to Mr. Gareth J.M. Saunders for the composition of the electronic format of these cards.
